Find your ideal rug size with expert advice tailored to every room.
When looking for a living room rug, consider your furniture and take note of the various layout options. If it’s an open floor plan, the rug should help define the space and improve the acoustics.
A 10’ x 13’ rug fits in a large room that is at least 11'6" x 15'6" feet. Allow for 18-36" of visible floor space between the perimeter of the rug and the wall. Use seating space or bed space to determine placement, not necessarily the center of the room.
An 8' x 11' rug fits in a 12' x 18' or larger living room, or in an open floor plan space. This rug should be large enough to accommodate most of your furniture, accessories, and decor elements, giving your space a more unified look.
A 7' x 10' rug fits nicely in an 11' x 13' or slightly larger room, or in an open floor plan space. In a defined living area, the best layout leaves a 12"-18" border of flooring around your rug.
A 6' x 9' rug works best in an 11' x 13' or smaller living room. This leaves about 2' of flooring bordering the rug on each side.
In a small living room, a 5' x 8' rug will fit underneath a coffee table, or in front of a fireplace with two comfy chairs sitting almost completely on the rug.
A 4’ x 6’ rug should be big enough to cover most of the floor area of a small, apartment-size living room. It’s also a great addition to any other living space, such as the area under the coffee table in front of the couch (front legs off the rug) in medium-size living rooms.
A 3' x 5' rug offers added cushioning and is the perfect size to highlight and elevate a living room landing place.
A good rule of thumb is to choose a rug that's 4 feet larger than your dining table. The rug should be spacious enough to accommodate all dining chairs comfortably, even when they are pulled out from the table.
A table for eight or more fits best on a 10' x 13' rug, offering enough room for all chairs to be on the rug when seated.
A table for six fits best on an 8' x 11' rug, leaving room on all sides for the dining chairs to be moved easily while staying on the rug.
Our runner rugs are the perfect functional addition to your home’s narrow corridors. For added comfort while walking, we recommend using a rug pad underneath.
When choosing the right rug size, focus on the size of your bed. Placing a large area rug under the bed is most common, and becomes the focal point of the room. A smaller rug next to the bed works well as an accent, and gives your feet something soft to land on.
A 10' x 13' rug works best with a king bed. The rug sits almost completely under the bed and nightstands, leaving about 2' of soft rug underfoot around the bed.
An 8' x 11' rug covers a queen bed and nightstands, with 3' of rug on either side of the bed, while a 6' x 9' rug gives an 18" border on each side.
A 6' x 9' rug fits nicely under a full bed, or opt for two 3' x 5' rugs on either side of the bed for added cushioning.
An 8' x 11', 6' x 9', or 5' x 8' rug all fit nicely under a twin bed, leaving ample room around the border. Two 3' x 5' or smaller rugs also work perfectly on either side of the bed.
The best option is to place a 3' x 5' rug between the two beds. Alternatively, place a runner rug across the middle of the beds.
When choosing a rug for the kitchen, consider the size and layout of your space. As a rule of thumb, the area in front of the sink is the most functional place to put your rug. A rug pad offers an extra layer of support for your feet.
A larger kitchen over 200 ft2 can most likely handle a 4' x 6' or 5' x 8' rug. If you have a kitchen island, position a 3' x 5', 4' x 6', 5' x 8', or a runner rug on either or both sides of the island.
For a medium kitchen between 100-200 ft2, a smaller 3' x 5' or '4' x 6' rug, or a runner rug in front of the sink, may work best.
A small kitchen that is under 70 ft2 can easily feel cluttered. Depending on your layout, opt for a 2' x 3' or 3' x 5' rug in front of the sink.
For a long, galley-style kitchen over 10 ft2 long, a runner rug along the sink side of the kitchen works best. If the galley is more narrow, position the runner in the center of the kitchen.
Use the layout of your furniture and the dimensions of your patio, deck, or porch as a guide to selecting the size of an outdoor rug. For the best look, leave 12-24" of visible floor space around your rug.
For more spacious patios and decks with outdoor seating or dining sets, opt for a larger area rug in 5' x 8', 6' x 9', or 8' x 11'. Choose a size that’s large enough to frame the furniture you want to highlight.
For smaller spaces, a 3' x 5' rug will fit nicely underneath a small patio table and two chairs. You can also opt for a 2' x 3' doormat by the entryway for a more streamlined look.
